Nationality is a risk signal

Private banks screen every client against sanctions lists, politically exposed person databases and their own risk appetite by country. A new citizenship changes that profile. Some institutions restrict onboarding for holders of particular investment-programme citizenships, especially where that is the only nationality presented.

Tax residence decides reporting

Under the Common Reporting Standard, participating banks report account information to the tax authority of the country where you are tax resident. A second passport alone does not change where you are tax resident. Planning residence and citizenship together avoids surprises.

What to check before you choose

  • Will your current banks accept the new position, in writing?
  • Does the route require a source-of-wealth story you can document cleanly?
  • Will it change where you are tax resident, and does your adviser agree?

Our view

A route is only as good as the institutions that accept it. We test every option against banking consequences before we recommend it.
